"Brain's Mozart concertos were the gold standard from the day they were released. In many ways, they are still. There are later players with comparable techniques (thanks to his example) and even in his day there were players with richer sounds or better legatos, but nobody brought such joy and personality to the horn and nobody has made these concertos sparkle as he did. And, to be sure, Brain's technique was and still is something to marvel at. His clean articulation at fast tempos, his complete control of the sound and pitch of a treacherous instrument, and his elegant phrasing make this a recording to treasure. Karajan, of course, loved elegance and instrumental mastery and is there with his great soloist every step of the way."
