Ricci’s performance is clean and sympathetic, and technically brilliant … (he) is far from being one of the virtuosi who ride roughshod over a work. Gamba too conducts with vigour and sympathy. (In Bruch’s concerto) Ricci has an outstanding technique and he has also a very characteristic tone, which alongside Perlman’s rich sound, for instance, is more open and uncovered. But the performance here has a fine intensity and there is a natural warmth which brings out the music’s temperament without indulging it. The stereo recording matches the playing with well defined quality and plenty of depth.
